Queen Tamar’s Bridge
This arched stone bridge is located on the Acharistskali River, in the territory of the village of Makhuntseti, in mountainous Adjara. Through it, one can reach the Makhuntseti waterfall. It is one of the largest arched bridges in Adjara, with a length of 20 meters and a height of 6 meters.
Experts confirm that, in addition to stone, the builders used a special mortar made of lime and eggs for its construction. Some even suggest that goat’s milk might have been used instead of water in the process.
What is certain is that the specially made mortar turned into stone, allowing the bridge to faithfully serve people for 800 years. According to legend, gold was placed within the bridge’s piers, meant to be used for its restoration in case of collapse.
Queen Tamar’s Bridge has undergone two reconstructions and remains functional to this day.
