
Vardzia
Vardzia is a 13-story fortress-city carved into a rock, located in tiers at a height of 100 m, which was built during the reign of Queen Tamar and includes more than 600 storage rooms, refectories, chambers, pantries, auxiliary storage rooms, and 25 cellars, in which 185 qvevris are located. It has been granted the status of an immovable cultural monument of national importance. Today, a monastery of monks functions here.
Vardzia is a fortress-city carved into a rock, its length is 900 meters, it is divided into floors in height, which are connected to each other by tunnels. This rocky city had the infrastructure of a modern city 900 years ago, including its own water supply system.
Centuries, constant wars and earthquakes have significantly damaged this unique structure. Today, 10 floors and 15 rock-cut churches have survived. In the center of the complex is the main monument - the frescoed Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
